I have been to a tiny one and it wasn't that loud(and I was about 10 feet from the speaker). I always hear people talk about how loud it is, but I can't imagine it being louder than a race track. Particularly the ones with F1 cars or NHRA drag cars.

There is nothing louder than an Iron Maiden concert, 80,000 people screaming the beginning of Fear of the Dark is unreal.

For Example:

Races are much louder to every concert I've been to. Especially the IMSA races and Sprint Cup cars. Endurance races are way louder than any concert. 6+ hours of V8's V10's and some Flat 6's get really loud really fast when there's like 55 of them

You'd be surprised. It can get overly loud at bigger venues. I went to Bonnaroo (a music fest) this year and wore ear plugs a lot of the time. Ok Go is playing in Indy in a few days ($20 tickets, I'm going), you should go and get a taste of a real concert.

I've been to couple small ones. They were nothing compared to two WRC cars doing donuts right in front of you.

100,000+ in Mexico DF for Metallica. My ears were ringing and my voice was pretty much gone. Volbeat and Kreator in a little bar was also very damaging to my ear balls

um, Slash playing Bluesfest, Metallica playing a good show in hte 90's, KISS on their last reunion tour in the earlier 90's, Any ACDC concert, Pantera live in Texas(home state) - i saw all of those and they were all louder then hell. Louder then a F1 race however not likely.

Metal concerts are ridiculous. Too bad they just don't seem to be for me. Too many people, I just hate too many people in a crowded place.

I went to a deadmau5 concert and didn't wear earplugs. I could hardly hear until 2 days later and my ears were wringing for the better part of the first day after.

I also went to an AC/DC concert. This time I wore earplugs, but the 3 hour drive home I still had some mild ringing.

What concert were you at, mumford and sons?

Oh yeah, too bad they are way out of the way for me! I have Road America and IMS and both don't have endurance races.

Watkins Glen is only 2 hours from me. I go to the 6 hour race every year great track to camp at. Unless it's NASCAR weekend.

I was at a small death metal show. I stood away from the mosh pit, so I was pretty close to the speaker, didn't really find it that loud. Like when an F1 car comes by, you almost nearly recoil in pain...almost but then the o-gasm takes over.

I don't know concerts seem the opposite of what I like. I like small venues. There was a metal band that was playing in Lafayette but I missed that, maybe they will be back this year!

I would consider a race track on par with a christian rock concert, with drag strips being closer to a metal concert.

When you get into older cars racing, they're closer to the drag strip end of the noise spectrum, I would say.

I've been to all sorts of concerts, and every one was louder than it should have been, and the sound systems were poorly set up/designed.

I'm sometimes in charge of a few outdoor concerts locally, for all sorts of events, and no matter what company I do it with, all sorts of compliments come out from people about how controlled the noise is. It's more of an art than a science, and too many people are just worried about collecting their paycheck to do better.

Small venues are excellent. That's why I'm excited that band is going to a small venue and not a big one.

I have! But it really depends on the kind of concert you go to. I went to the Peter and Paul (sadly no Mary for she had recently departed) and it was a lovely folk music concert, not loud and very nice to attend. At the other end of the spectrum, I've also been to two K-Pop concerts. Boy is it loud, especially with a whole load of screaming fangirls, although to be honest I semi-screamed along with them too. You get caught up in the whole atmosphere but sometimes it's too much. The first concert I went to really had my emotions up since I loved the group in earnest. Second concert was just too much screaming from the fangirls. But in both situations, my hearing was rendered temporarily out of business for a few hours as it can get really loud, and I was nowhere near the front. I was near the back actually (because I'm poor boo hoo hoo).

Edit: I wouldn't say that a race was any more or less louder, since I've been to the Macau Grand Prix. Admittedly I was at a 90º corner at the end of a very long straight so all I heard were downshifts and all I saw were flames and cars crashing. Good experience.

Also, I'm actually part of the crowd in this GIF. This was the second concert that I mentioned.

speaking of older cars I saw the Can Am race at road America this year and it was ridiculous, I was on the slower part of the track and after 10 minutes my ears were ringing...

I've been to a few concerts. I've also been to NHRA 4-Wide Nationals at Charlotte. I really, really doubt that anything is as loud as that. The noise (it's hard to even consider it noise) shakes the world. It's like being bombed.

You have to stand on the main straight! I do it at every race I go to. It is amazing! Like when the F1 cars came by it almost felt like my vision shook, it was ridiculous. The Can Am cars were just as amazing. Very highly recommended.

Big concerts just aren't for me, too many people too few places to move. It isn't the fact they are loud, I can handle loud!

I remember reading that a concert front row is like 120 or 130 dB but a F1 car from 15 feet is 150 or something ridiculous.

Kinja'd!!! KnowsAboutCars > YSI-what can brown do for you
08/11/2014 at 13:35

Kinja'd!!!0

It probably depends on the music genre of the concert too. The concerts I've been to have been world music/jazz/rap concerts and I'm pretty sure a rock/metal/punk concert of similar size would be a lot louder.

The race marshals are fascists, they won't let you stand next to the track anymore, even though it's a street circuit. They put up solid barriers next to the track and even fence off bridges that go over the track. "You can come to our luxury shops and casinos and drink till your absolutely pissed drunk but don't you ever dare take a peek." :(

Also, the only grandstand at the middle of the main straight was occupied by VIP and the press. The Lisboa Corner is where all the action happens - it's where all manner of crashes happen and where you get to see three WTCC cars try to go around the same corner side by side and a wrecked F3 car fly off the recovery truck as it rounds the bend!

That sucks! Here in America, you can get up close and personal with the track, and it has great viewing for non VIP fans! The older the better as well! American's just know how to make racing awesome to watch!

I got close to this corner at Road America, I was in the forest. It was bone shattering! The cars were already loud enough but the trees made it extra loud!

Was that The Hawk? I went last year and was nearly killed by a McLaren. It was almost like I was accidentally on the entry road to the track or something...

Electronic music is the worst, it's less about the volume and more about the pressure on your eardrums. They have the shows here in a small venue with closing doors. It's actually quite painful.

Kinja'd!!! YSI-what can brown do for you > Sam

Volume>pressure. They are just trying to make it painful. . . it just kind of comes off as forced if they do that.

And please do go on about this "almost died" story.

Oh, I was wandering around and somehow ended up on the entry way to pit lane. There was a McLaren Can-Am car that came flying up behind me. Luckily I heard it (they're kind of loud, as you probably know) and actually had to jump out of the way with an inch or so to spare. He was only doing about 35-40, so almost died was a bit of an exaggeration, but it would have banged me up pretty bad getting launched over one of these bad-boys -

Haha, that's fantastic! I am not sure how it would feel to get hit by them. It might just break your ankles or something cause of how low they are.

I was by the Canada Corner, went hiking, found myself on the back straight by the woods. Kept walking and then all of a sudden I see Canada Corner... pretty sure I wasn't supposed to be there, so I just turned around. It was great though, the cars sounded great back there!

That's why I love the smaller races. You can go anywhere you want and even if you get caught, they just tell you to go back to where you should be.

Try getting away with any of this at a Formula 1 race.

I've been to rock concerts, it's pretty loud but I don't think you can compare them to the sound that F1 cars make. The noise they make is deafening, trust me I was at a Monte Carlo race a few years ago without ear muffs.
